Il Kathakali è il teatro classico indiano per antonomasia. Originario del Kerala, la verdeggiante regione dell’India sud-occidentale, distilla i succhi di una multiforme cultura di pratiche spettacolari e rituali sino ad organizzarsi nella forma finale e attuale intorno alla metà del XVIII secolo.
La celebrità del Kathakali, vero e proprio mito per la pratica scenica occidentale, consiste essenzialmente nello splendore e nel rigore della tecnica e nella leggendaria preparazione dei suoi attori.
Il Laboratorio si rivolge a quanti sono interessati alla conoscenza diretta della cultura scenica orientale. Non sono necessarie esperienze precedenti.
Date: da sabato 2 aprile a giovedì 7 aprile, dalle 18.30 alle 21.30 con la prima mezz’ora dedicata ad una riflessione teorica sulla danza indiana Kathakali.
Costo: €150 per un massimo di 15 iscritti.

Sarà inoltre possibile nella settimana dal 2 al 7 aprile richiedere lezioni private con il maestro John Kalamandalam. Gli orari delle lezioni private saranno stabilite con i singoli iscritti. Il costo per un’ora di lezione è di 25 euro.
Kalamandalam K. M. John. Nato in Kerala nel 1955, si è formato presso il celebre Kerala Kalamandalam di Cheruthuruthy, l’illustre istituzione indiana riconosciuta come la scuola più accreditata per il Kathakali, sotto la guida dei grandi maestri Padmanabhan Nair e Vijayakumar. Come insegnante e attore del Kerala Kalamandalam ha partecipato a numerose tournée in tutto il mondo. Ha inoltre studiato sanscrito e letteratura Kathakali. È stato fondatore, ed è direttore, della Kalatharangini Kathakali School, importante istituzione educativa e culturale concentrata sulla diffusione delle arti tradizionali del Kerala. Dal 1979 è Maestro presso il Teatro tascabile di Bergamo.

Kathakali is India’s classical theatre par excellence. Originating in Kerala, the lush green region of southwestern India, Kathakali distills the essence of a multifaceted culture of spectacular and ritualistic practices until taking its final and current form towards the middle of the 18th century. The popularity of Kathakali, a true myth for western scenic practice, consists essentially in the magnificence and rigour of its technique and in the legendary preparation of its actors.
The workshop is addressed to participants who are interested in a direct knowledge of oriental scenic culture. No previous experience is necessary.
Dates: Saturday 2 April to Thursday 7 April, 6.30-9.30 pm (the first thirty minutes will be dedicated to a theoretical reflection on Indian Kathakali dance).

In the week of 2-7 April, it will also be possible to request private lessons with Master John Kalamandalam. The schedule of private lessons will be decided with each individual participant. The cost for a one-hour lesson is 25 euros.
Kalamandalam K. M. John. Born in Kerala in 1955, he trained at the famous and prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy, the distinguished Indian institution recognised as the most accredited school for Kathakali, under the guidance of the great Masters Padmanabhan Nair and Vijayakumar. As a teacher and actor of ‘Kerala Kalamandalam’ he has taken part in numerous tours all over the world. He also studied Sanskrit and Kathakali literature. He founded the Kalatharangini Kathakali School, an important educational and cultural institution focused on the diffusion of traditional Kerala arts, which he still directs. He has been Master of Kathakali at the Teatro Tascabile in Bergamo since 1979.
